Nicknamed the Town of 1000 Fountains, this sub-prefecture of the Bouches-du-Rhône department is only 35 km from the Mediterranean. The birthplace of the artist Paul Cézanne, who immortalized it in a great many of his paintings, it boasts magnificent monuments and museums, including the Hôtel de Caumont, a location not to be missed. The former capital of the Counts of Provence, it has retained a strong attachment to local tradition. With its colourful markets that truly smack of Provence, and its pedestrian streets, Aix is a very welcoming town.
